Experience with Pheidole pallidula

Beitragvon sithmaster676 » 27. Aug 2007 11:40

oh i didn't know that but these rules aren't very well known but like i said most species cant survive our weather so most wouldn't survive but some may adapt like fire ants in the usa.

I kept Pheidole pallidula for a number of years. I can confirm that they are very good at escaping and that is why I had to destroy them in the end. I was in rented accomodation at the time and didn't have the space to look after them properly.

A couple of things I would add to the posts I have seen about them in the English forum.

I didn't have much luck feeding them seeds, but they certainly liked bread - a lot! Obviously you need to feed them insects and meat as well, but I found small bits of bread easier and less messy than sugar water as a source of carbohydrate.

If the colony escapes, all is not lost. I had a big party and put the formicarium in a cupboard. Unfortunately it was cramped in there and they did manage to escape. They set up home under the floor in my bathroom and I was convinced that I had lost the colony forever. They do like a moist substrate though, so I left a houseplant on the floor for a week or so. Sure enough they relocated their nest into the plant pot and I was able to recover the queen, the brood and virtually all the workers.

They are only ants after all. And if they move nest, it's probably because they are unhappy with where they are. Offer them something better and they will move in. Ants are nothing, if not logical.

I don't think one missing antenna will be a problem. If she doesn't eat, or lay eggs then tell antstore.

Fine to hear your new ants arrived. ;) If it looks like she is not having a problem with the one antenna she will be fine.

Good luck with your new colony.

Just a thought is Pheidole pallidula a good ant to get as a second colony or should you have a fair bit of experience first ??
LOL im a little ambitious.. and would very much love a second colony on the go.. preferabily one that does not have to hibernate..

exotic Campontus species are a good place to start for non-hibernating species, they are relativly easy to look after, but u do need sum experience, and being able to create a stable (temp/humidity) for them is vital

If your considering it, then i'd recomend u create a nest well in advance, and check its vitals reguly so u know what to change and can get it stable for the ants to move into :)

There are many
Like miszt say some Camponotus. But there are Polyrhachis, too. Easy to keep, dont need much (only after some time: more basins ^^ ) and looks very nice ;)
Maybe thats another opinion for you

having an antenna missing wont harm her in anyway with one she can still communicate with her daughters and egg laying will certainly not be affected like you have said. One of my lasius niger queens had two legs missing and this didn't stop her doing what she usually did in anyway.
