skippy,i dont mean to sound fussy but i have lasuis everywhere where i live from top to bottom, and they have never have really been my favourite species they r alrite though.they r one of the easiest species to keep in captivity (so i hear) but i dont fancy this species yet nor phiodole pallidula cos for one i already own a colony :)
there is one formica species i rather like formica sanguinea but what du u mean when u said they need lots of care?
if they need fusca slaves i can go down my local forest and get some of there eggs.dont worry i wont go mad with this ill just take try an take round about a quatre of there eggs cos ayyyy a colony gotta survive. :thumleft:

but thats if i get them. some time within the next 5 years i hope to get a colony of this species so i would like to know what there like so is there any chance someone can help me with some tips and expirence........please anyone? :-k

hm... that was in deed a mistake to make ;) (from me)

I also keep Formica sanguinea and like Skippy said, they need more care than other ants. They 'need' slaves but you have to give them cocoons no eggs. They are harder to keep than Camponotus ligniperda ore Myrmica rubra.

Well once they you have a small colony it is easier. But first they need to start up a colony and that is the hard part. You need to give them much cocoons to start with. If this fails you have no colony and they queen will die soon. Also later on, the workers can carry for there selfs they do not really need slaves but it better they have slaves, to do the work in the nest area. (some species with slaves, need slaves to survive.)

thank u jimmy what would our forum ever do without the famous jimmyve

;) thanks, hehe. I just spend a lot of time here that is why i'm a "profi". There is a lot that i do not know about ants i'm not a expert, i just have much species and i use my experience to help other keepers.

JimmyV - Formica fusca can have more than one queen in a colony. I have seen polygynous colonies many times.

I disagree with some of the posters on here. I think Pheidole pallidula are an easy ant to keep, and I think would suit your desires for ants that work together and are active. They are easy to keep in a basin nest, so you probably won't see as much of their behaviour underground, but their activities on the surface more than make up for this in my opinion. The only problem is escaping and this is something you need to think about hard in advance. I don't see why someone who is 13 would have trouble with this as long as they thought about it, made a plan and perhaps showed the result to some experienced keepers on the forum.

My most successful formicarium for this species was a large fishbowl, perhaps 70 cm in diameter. I constructed a tightly fitting lid - you would probably need adult help with this, and as a precaution you could put the whole bowl in a shallow water basin. Cut a small circular hole in the lid and use a fine steel mesh gauze to cover it. - this needs to be very fine (to stop the ants escaping) to allow some sort of ventilation - though these ants like some humidity. Also use ptfe near the top of the bowl, to discourage the ants from even going near the lid.

I know now

I never told him they where to difficult to keep, but like you said yourself, they love to escape ;) and that makes them difficult.
