Messor barbarus

Beitragvon kashmir79 » 1. Nov 2007 19:25

the ants will wake up from time to time to grab some food for the queen and workers, its just the eggs/larvae that will most likely die over hybernation as they need heat to develop :(

eggs and cocoon/pupae will not survive hibernation but larva can if they are far enough along the development stage and have been fed a lot before hibernation then they can survive similar to the workers.

Hi all,

I was wondering, if i was to put my Messor Barbarus in hibernation now, what would be the optimal time to bring them out?

i believe messor barbarus only require 2-3 months hibernation so January-February would be the best time to take them out if you hibernated them now.

South European ants prefer a hibernation period of 2-4 months so if you put them in hibernation know you can wake them up in February.

Hi all,

Thank sithmaster676 and JimmyVe. :D
I have another question about Messor barbarus ants. I have recently discovered that Messor Barbarus require 10-15deg C for hibernation, what i wanted to know is were would i put the ants were the temperature is 10-15deg C?

@kashmir79
I need to correct you on this one. In the fridge temperature is between 5-10 °C. So that is a bit too cold. Temperature outside in a shed can also drop bellow zero °C.
Garage in the house is a good idea. Or any unheated room in your house.

in deed, i put mine in a unheated room. The temperature never go below 10°c there so it is perfect. ;)

Cool,
Let me know some feedback on the site.
Ive got 1 colony of m.barbarus as mentioned, 1 colony of over a hundred M.Ruginodis in a starter farm set, 1 colony of T.caespitum now over 30 workers from the original 5 bought from here about 2 months ago, 1 colony of C.ligniperda 5 workers bought last week from here, and 1 colony of L.niger with 4 workers that started with the queen that I caught in the summer. All in starter sets...
I highly recommend T.caespitum, they are very lively.
