sorry typed that wrong i meant they haven't grown much in a year they only produced 20 workers but i think England's terrible weather might have something to do with it as i keep this colony in my garden shed.

Hmmm.....you have Lasius niger, right? They should grown more than 20 workers in a year.....but it can be from the weather....but is dont know.....do you give them enough insects?
yeah they get lots of insects for this colony i give them roughly two each week but they still dont increase in size its a bit worrying but next year i plan to bring this colony indoors and see if this affects her growth it will also make a good experiment to see the effects of heat and weather on the queens egg production

yeah but i keep them in my garden shed which over the terrible summer we have had hasn't had much heat so that may be a good reason, im not sure if this colony will survive hibernation if not which would be terrible as this was the first colony i ever got then i have another Lasius niger colony which i could place in there tank

It not because it is a small colony they will not survive hibernation. If you take care of them they will survive. (keep the nest moist and look at them once a week to see of everything is alright)
