im trying to get some honeypot ants... does anyone know how big they get when they get distended? like the diameter of the repletes? thanks

According to the photo, their belly will distend to the size of a worker. So If you are looking at Myrmecocystus mimicus, that would be 6-8mm. You will have bigger repletes with Myrmecocystus mexicanus though.

I'm currently keeping a M. mimicus queen with about 7 eggs. I hope she will make it until the first workers hatch. She has lost all her previous brood after I have received the package.
I can tell you the size of the repletes then. ^^

I am also In the same possion I also have a Myrmecocystus mimicus queen though she keeps eating her brood , which is annoying when they are so close , so I am feeding her .. which wil hopefully stop her eating her brood.

I have one Camponotus sp. (all yellow queen) and I have it for ca 2-3 months and she 4 times ate her eggs ,this last 2-3 weeks a get her on special dark place and I feeding her every 3.-4. day and now ... oallaaaa ,she has 2 nice big larvae ,maybe cocoons at tommorow and some small larvae . Point of this text is... I thought she cannot make colony and I thought she die ,but now I happy only waiting for cocoons and first workers.

It is very frustrating if she ate cocoons too ,she must be hungry. But I think it can be impossible to look now to make colony ,but I believe you will done it ! You must believe ,you must making all on 100 percent ,and then you´ll have nice colony with happy queen

I have read that Myrmecocystus mexicanus gets repelets more often than myrmecocystus mimicus, is that true?

If it is true, then i should try get those instead of mimicus. Anyone who know anywere to buy myrmecocystus mexicanus?

mimicus honey pot ant replites get to about the size of a garden pea, so about 6-8mm as was said before, Australian species (Melophorus & Campanotus spp) tend to be a bit bigger, about the size of a kidney bean, mayb a little smaller

depending on the species, they are edible to, if u feel the urge, they are a delicacy amongst the Native Americans and Australians, certainly something I intend to do when I get some Australian ones Not all are edible however, mimicus I believe are, but u should check for yourself first

They are in deed very nice ants, but i don't know someone who has experience with them. Are they hard to keep ?
