Found More Ants

Beitragvon Pugberto » 26. Aug 2007 11:10

The weather was good yesterday and all the ant nests in my area began there final Nupitul (!) flight. At evening there were Lasuis Niger and Lasuis Flavus Queens everywhere. I already had Lasuis Niger queen so I collected a few Lasuis Flavus queens. I put one into one tube and four into another for the moment, when I came to move them this morning they were relaxed and cleaning one another. Have they created a colony together?

i have found a colony near where i live under a stone that had both a Lasius flavus colony and a Lasius niger colony because Lasius flavus are so timid they share there nests on occasion with other species

Hello Pugberto,
run a search on pleometrosis. As soon as the first workers apear, all but one queens will be killed. If the surviving queen is not too badly injured from those fights, she will have her own colony. Been experimented with thousands of times, always the same result.
Also, why do you collect more then one queen? Taking care of a single colony will be hard enough once they grow, you will need a decent tank for them next year with the option to add more basins. Expenses for a colony dont stop with the testtube. Dont forget that when taking queens from nature. They usually fade away in testtubes without beeing taken care off.
Only collect what you need, please.

As long as it is a species that live natural in the place you release them, (and if they do not come from another country ore state) it is not a problem to do that. ;)
