I'm not sure about that Lowth01, it is always a risk putting 2 species together. Do you mean in the same nest ? Ore let them share the same out world ?

Nylanderi will live happily with some ants, but Herculeanus are pretty agressive ants and will probly kill the colony if it finds them, having said that, Nylanderi do not leave scent trails, so it may be possible, if the tank is big enough, rember that Herculeanus will grow pretty big after a few years, 1000+ ants, I wuldnt recomend keeping them together tbh, pherhaps find another species that is as docile as Nylanderi :) they are very nice ants, n have very little defence against preditors and attackers, wuld feel very sorry for them being put in with a species like Herculeanus

Just make some grid that nylanderi can pass but herculeanus cannot. That way nylanderi is safe, atleast their brood won't get stolen aqnd queen killed :)

This is an interesting idea. How about having two formicariums each connecting to the opposite side of a basin, or even to two basins connected together so each colony had their own territory? Mesh could be placed over one of the connectors to prevent the passage of the larger species if necessary.

Which combinations of species might work in a set-up like this?

well I have a 30cm by 20cm basin atm. i know its small but i was gonna add more to it wen the camponotus colony gets bigger. i was jus gonna place the Temnothorax nylanderi in an acorn on the ground. Its jus cus i wanted anova species of ant but i dont have enuff room for anova formicarium. Ant store says that Temnothorax nylanderi can stay wid anova species of ant. is it worth jus tryin? i dont want mass ant wars on my hands though lol
