Possible Farmicarium???

Beitragvon 4mykids » 31. Jul 2007 20:48

For $7.99, a trip to IKEA and a little imagination, this could be the makings of a nice Farmicarium - I'll work on one and post it here. These are 5 crystal clear thick plastice containers with a cap on lid and holes arleady made for you.

I grabbed a couple and will experiment

Sorry Miszt,

They are bathroom organizers - they are a lotion container, tissue box, tooth brush and hair brush holders, soap dish ect. I guess. The big one is about half the size of a shoe box - pretty nice!!!

They are thick so they won't crack easily. I didn't notice the section I found them at - I will find the name tonight when I go home - I just put the item name is Google and pulled that exact picture up -

The set is called "KORSFJORD". Try to search for it at the Ikea website.
In my opinion, these boxes are way to small for a foraging area. You can use it as a nestbox where you can place your Ytong or plaster nest.
Some ant species are able to bite throuth the concrete and having a box around the nest minimizes the risk of an outbreak.

I doubt it, plastic is very flat and smooth making it hard for them to find weak spots.

Hi guy's,

I have about 14 side walk Queens that already have about a dozen workers. I plan to pore the plaster/perlite into the big container wait for it to dry remove the plaster once it dries and then shave my tunnels and cavities around the outside for easy veiw.

I will post this here when completed - this is perfect for this scenario -

Just trying to share some idea's here.

if ur gona use Plaster, which tbh i dont recomend (have a search on here, theres a few reasons why), rather than shave the tunnels out, u could just make them out of plastacine or non-hardening clay, then the plaster will mold to it :D

Wow GREAT IDEA Skippy thanks so much for sharing! Wish I had thought of this earlier when both my test tubes caught mold and I had to move both queens to new test tubes. Ones eggs got completely destroyed sadly. By the way what exactly did you feed your queens. Was it the sugared water everyone else seems to swear by here? Do share.

Ore you just put some sugar in water and give that. ;)
I like to change from time to time, so they don't always have the same things to eat. ;)
