HUGE Queen found!

Here you can everything questions or discuss about ants.

Got some news guy's,

That HUGE winged ant I found IS a Queen and now has at least 6 or 7 eggs in its tupperware home. I left the test tube in there inside the tupperware I have it in and it still goes in there even though it can't turn around - it just backs out. The eggs are kept in the test tube. This Queen still has it's wings.

MilitANT - I took the best measurement I could and from head to the end of it's wings it is just about an inch long. I am trying to get a better picture for you. My computer here at work did not allow me to connect my camera to send the picture I have now. Oh, I will also send that specimen to you as soon as I can this week

I actually took a few pics of all my ants and will send from home.

While most people are probably able to google a converter, it's best to use SI units. This saves people trouble and will get you more replies.

Is this purely the body size or does it include limbs and antennae?

Guys, this is a Dasymutilla sp. (maybe Dasymutilla occidentalis) which is a wasp! Commonly known as "Velvet Ant" or "Cow-Killers". :P

Edit. Sorry, I was mislead by the picture on page 1. :)
Can you post a picture of yours then?

The picture on page 1 is probably a wasp (like you said) but we are still waiting on the picture from 4mykids to see if it is indeed such an animal like in that picture. ;)

Hello all,

Hi TiGGa, this is an ant for sure.

I was so excited about the eggs that I saw so I really didn't want her to get stressed out by me moving her and taking a few pics. I will absolutely take a few and post them here. When I first found my Carpenter Queens and they just layed their eggs, I took a few pictures and moved one of my carpenter Queens around a bit and the next day I saw that she had eaten ALL of her eggs.

This is the biggest Queen I have ever saw so I was not going to take any chances but after these post I have to :!:

You will see that it is an ant and for sure a Queen but just a big one.
