woo my camponotus herculeanus colony has gotten bigger. There are 6 workers now and 4 cocoon thingys (technical langauge there lol) the workers seem to just be looking after the eggs. When will the ants emerge and leave to forage? I have to admit though when i 1st received the queen i put the test tube in the nest without the bung covering it. So the queen covered the end with soil. will the workers undo this?

No, if the tube (nest) is not covered they will cover it up there selfs (if possible) Most species don't like light in there nest.
When will the ants emerge and leave to forage?

When they leave there nest to cater food ? Soon, small colonies go out at night, in nature they are more save in the dark. But if the colony is getting bigger they will go out during day time to.

The first generation of ants (workers) does not live very long (depends on which species it is). The next generation live much longer.

Example: Lasius niger first generation lives about 6 moths up to a year.
next generations 1 year up to 3 years.

an ant worker life span can be different depending on the time of year, if the worker is born at spring it will live around 6 months whereas if it born before hibernation it lifespan can double to 12 months due to having hibernated

You don't need to live in the rain forest for that. :P

That is true sith, but if very much depends on the species and the conditions the ants are kept in.
