They will shed their wings themselves when needed (and may eat their own wings for a 'protein boost' too). Do not pull them off for them. They won't appreciate it I assure you :P

They may just have been wandering around from a nearby nest too, remember - and so have not been on their mating flight at all yet.

i don't think that the mating flights have actually begun yet like hyper said they usually come in the summer holidays near the end you my just be seeing those brave few that have left the nest for a wander. i have seen no flying ants outside of the nest in my area of the country.

Hi all,

Kiam i have been finding queens for 3 days now and they all look the same so i think they are lasius flavus, but they could also be lasius lasioides. i have also found a queen today 28.June.07 so keep your eyes open  .

there has been a huge amount of rain recently, it may be that they are refugees from a flooded nest :(

yeah because there has been mass flooding over the country i would be very surprised if they were fertile as we have had no hot weather recently except for maybe today where i live

I think that nuptual flight occur may to july for Lasius niger. I found a bunch of queen at the beginning of june this year and also a year ago. It was after rain when there are enough moisture in the air. It can't be that different in the UK. Maybe you have more rain. :)

Hi all,

With global worming we are getting less and less rain. Userly queens of a certan species will only come out 1 day in a year, but for some reason the winged ants of the same species come out for 2-5 days in a year. Maby thats global worming aswell

i wouldn't say that global warming has affected our amount of rain at all last week we got a months worth of rain in a day so i can see how you can say that.

Yesterday i saw hundreds. People said there were flights in early July, Never really saw any here in manchester, but yesterday was very humid and hot and I saw tons of flying ants and several wingless queens about. Hopefully will still be some today because I didnt have anything to catch them.
