A Few Questions :)

Beitragvon Kiam » 24. Jun 2007 13:13

Heres some questions I want to ask and want to know

For lasius flavus how many workers would they have to reach up to to make winged ants if anyone knows?

And If the Lasius flavus winged ants were trying to fly would that mean the whole mating flight is happening outside and everywhere around them?

I know all ants begin small when there the first ones to hatch in the colony is it possible to make them bigger by giving them more good food and that or not ?

And If I put eggs/larvae/cocoons in the colony off Lasius flavus from other colonies and they accept them will they like become what they are like forage underground or with lasius niger would they always come up and forage like they do or do they do the same as there Lasius flavus friends?

Last one Has anyone tried Sugary water to feed your ants I feed my Lasius flavus that and they absolutely love it ;)

Hope You can answer some off my questions ;)

Hello Kiam

I admire yuor enthusiasm
I can not really respond to all of yuor questions as I do not have the answeres, indeed I do not have the expertise to really know anything, that said, I think that it does not matter what yuo feed yuor ants, they will stay thier destined size, I am sure you cannot produce lets say a jarrasic sized ant by feeding him certain foods..!!

Aslo I would hypothise that in the wild differnt species would not normally "mix" ( I am sure thier are more expertly aware members that can answere this for sure), so I do not think it prudant to be mixing speciese together, just because you can

And keeping to thier instinctly bred behaviour, I would think that an underground forager, would indeed try to do what he instintly knows, regardless of his companions. It would be a bit like taking a tiger who instinclty hunts alone, and placing him with lions that hunt as a pack.!

I hope I am able to offer a little wisdom to you here...

Do keep up with your thirst for knowledge, and never be afraid to ask, I find it refreshing from a guy as yuong as yuorself that you take some great pride in the natural world around you.

Yes unfortunately sometimes there does become a need to irradicate things in nature that overwhelm thier/our environment, even when our own instinct/conciouns tells us its wrong :?

lol Ooops, I did not respond to that particular enquirey but now I shall, as you maybe aware I keep Camponotus cruentatus, and although I offer them the suger water, they do not often touch it, as Cruentatus are particularly carniverus..!!
I feed them frozen Wax Moth Larvae (thawed ofcorse) and I also have a few seperate that I am allowing to turn to moth, they like these a lot.!

okay, i'm sorry Kiam, mist them,

I can not put a number on it, if the colony is strong enough they will produce winged ants. a full grow colony of Lasius flavus can contain about 100.000 ants. but i is possible they will produce winged ants if they have about a 1.000 ants.

That i'm not sure off. I guess so, in nature they 'all' flight out together, but if ants in captivity also join them ... ?
But if you have winged ants, don't let them outside, only if you collected the colony close to your home.

Wow 100,000 Ill be really happy when they reach 1000 :P They have about 200 ;)

Why not let winged ants go If they want to go to mating flight will that all like try to fly out but be blocked and then I should open it and perhaps follow them so when they drop there wings I can make a new colony ?

And Yes I collected the whole colony outside off my house I was rather lucky i'd say ;)

about a 100.000, could be more could be less (a bit) ;)

You collected the colony outside your home so it is not that bad if you let them go. but if you collect a colony about 10 miles from you home and you let the winged ants out than it could hurt the nature. It is not done to let ants form imported species go to.
I don't think it is possible to follow them, the mating happens high in the sky. ;)

Yes but they might land and most off the time there on ground

And how can it hurt the nature if there is more that already fly around?

hmm. I try to explain it in English. If you let ants (species) go in nature that don't belong there they are going to hurt the ecosystem of the land/country. They probably have no natural enemies there. Like the Fire ants in the USA or the Bullfrogs in Australia.
