I've noticed a lot of people asking for ant apartments. Since you're looking for one too, I wanted to ask, what's the advantage of having an ant apartment? Do you put soil in it or do you keep ants in it without the soil?

Ant apartments are mostly small farms, so you do not need much space. Most of the time they put soil in it. Ants do always need something to have there nest in. Soil, plaster, y-tong, wood... etc.

Thanks jimmy! I like ytong nests because they retain moisture well. However I heard ytong is rare in this country so I was thinking plaster maybe? I also love wooden nests but I'm thinking how would I carve chambers in it? Is there any kind of tool that will help us carve chambers very neatly into a wooden block? I love the look benton nests but benton is too heavy so my ideal would be a nests that looks like a benton nest but isn't actually a benton nest. see what I mean? By the way, does anyone know how the watering system in a benton nest is built? I've heard there is a reservoir on the top of the nest...but how does this keep the entire nest moist? Are there tunnels from the reservoir to all the chambers? However how does this prevent flooding or too much water in the chambers? I'd love to get to know more, that way I can construct my nests accordingly. By the way is it possible to keep carpenters in benton or do you always have to keeo carpenters in wood?

YTong is basically just aerated concrete. In the UK it is not called YTong (which is more like a brand/make in a way), it's just "Aerated Concrete", with 1 common/well known manufacturer/brand being "Celcon" (and so sometimes people just call them "Celcon blocks").

In the US, I'd imagine any major DIY/hardware shop (like B&Q... no idea if that's in the US too or not but I'm sure you have plenty of equivalents), or builder merchants, would sell some form of "aerated concrete", just pop in and ask. Check it out yourself - see how soft it is by seeing if you can dig your fingernail in to it a bit by pushing to check it's going to be ok. It's a very common building material all over the world, and the USA is no exception!

I don't have experience with beton nests but i'm do not understand how you keep them moist ?

I dont know ,I never had beton nest ,but I think ,it can be good to look ,but no good for ants. I think ,it is only for ants ,what lives in dry climate. Second problem - I think beton is very cold so you must to use some heat system or somethink like that. On the photos you can see Harpegnathos and it can be good ant for this nest - when you have that heat system.

So it is only for ants ,what like dry climate ,so I also think ,ytong is better.

I think beton (concrete) nest can be made the same way as plaster nest. And you can moisture it in the same way. But the concrete will not disintegrate over the time as plaster would.
