Hundreds of Queens go for a swim.

Wow!!!

My house sits about 100yrds from a creek and and a ton of trees. I have a big pool and a few days ago left my pool light on. I have been busy skimming about 500 Queen ants out of my pool. I have filled about 18 test tubes up with the ones that looked healthy and ched their wings already.

It was pretty easy to edentify the males from females. The males where pretty much dead while the females all attached themselves to a floating I had in the pool. They are half the size of the carpenter Queens but a pretty nice size to check out.

Wow, I already had 6 really nice carpenter queens I have to make a fram for that are in tubes with about 12 to 20 eggs already.

I have been skimmy the queens out of the pool for three days now. Seems like they are busy at night at about this time every year.

I know.... Pictures..... - I'm trying to find the time.

P.S. I need more test tubes : )

Sorry for the spelling - I'm at work so in a bit of a rush : )

What will I do with them all?

I have a large farm half way completed. I will put the healthiest carpenter queen and her family in when they are ready. The rest I will most likely keep for the winter and then let go the following summer.

I don't have the time to build housing for all of them.

No idea Hypervolocity,

Pics would help I'm sure but I have turned over a few logs in my back yard and found the same type queen with a large colonies a few times.
The queen is almost three times larger then any other and all the other ants are the same size. They are twice as big as the side walk ants.

I would love to send them to enthusiest everywhere however here in the US, they are a bit up-tight about sending Quens across state lines. I could however put them on e-Bay for local enthusiest. Good idea!!!

At any rate, my wife would love them out of the house : )

That would be nice. ;)

I agree, taking 10 queens to make sure you have at least 1 healthy queen that can start off with a colony. And than trade/give/sell the other queens/colonies. But don't make a sport of it, capturing 100 queens just to sell them.
This said ;) I'm very glad for you. I hope at least one of them can start a nice colony.
I now the law is very tight there in the USA. If there is any chance I'm always open to new queens. ;)

;) lol. Make sure they don't catch you. ;)

No i understand why they did it, i mean the law of not sending ants across borders. But i find it hard for keepers like us. It makes the prices of the ants very hi and almost unable to get them. (like ants from Australia)
But i know, there are always people that is getting tired of there ants an let them go in nature.

well the main reason that America is tight on its ant shipment laws is because the country is currently be invaded by fire ants from the south that got to America on board ships, this just goes to show that if colonies are released in foreign countries that they can actually adapt and damage the environment quite badly.
but like jimmy said it does make our life's a lot harder

I just spent the last 2 days reading that boards discussions.

Wow, WAY too tense in there - A lot of arguing and conflict.

I am still skimming out Queen ants from my pool - most don't make it but a save a couple dozen each day when I come home from work.

The Ant Farm Message Board is way too strict. Antdude is pretty ruthless which makes the forum humorless and pretty boring. I feel bad for the newbies who join there -- they get such poor treatment for just asking questions. I found this site a few days ago and I like it much better. :D
