Hi all,

Kiam do not put 250+ ants in an antworld!!!!! It is still to small. And also Lasius Flavus are underground foragers, im having truble feeding mine because thay are in a basin and do not come out. So you need to find a nest that they will be happy to forage in.

p.s
I think Lasius flavus come out of there nest during the night aswel.

Not wanting to sound all authoritive here........ but, it seems to me that you are not taking this seriously Kiam, these are many lifes that yuo are dealing with, I am consernd for thier well being, they have a right to live and survive as you do, may I suggest finding a quiet spot either in yuor garden or somwehere that yuo know is a quiet place, and setting them free again, Yuo can start at a more convienient point, when yuo have a set up ready to put them in, I do not mean to offend yuo or anyone else here, please do not take this that way, I am thinking of the "ANTS AND THIER WELL BIENG"

If yuo wanted to keep them in such a way, that later on yuo can recollect them, how about filling a bucket with sand/soil making a few tunnel entry points, and then placing the tube in it, (they might welll dig into the bucket and make a nest there) that way at least you stand a fighting chance that they will not dissapear, and yuo can recollect them later, when yuo have some king of adequate housing, provide some water and suger for them in the bucket, at least they can get about a bit more, it cannot be very healthy for so many ants living in a testube.
I apreciate that yuo collected them from demolision, for this I admire you, and that they might now well be dead, but yuo must now provide them with "ALL" that they require, as they now rely on yuo for "ALL" thier needs.

Please take on board what I have siad.

I know But they will escape from the bucket :S

They must be doing good if laying alot of eggs they are I feed them daily flies and help them

And if you think the test tube is full off ants it really isnt its not even a quarter full of ants they have a bit off space to walk around and that so they should survive for a while...

Darradar has a point there kiam.

If you want to keep ants always try to make a farm first, a farm that is made at the request of the species you are going to keep in there. Each species has there own needs.

I am glad others here support my comments, Kiam, it is not guaranteed that the ants will dissapear, look back at what I suggested, "putting them in a bucket, and prividing some tunnel entry points with food and water on hand" why they might well not need to leave the area, and set up home within the bucket, who knows what they will do, but what I do know is, and I think so do you deep down, they have the right to choose.
Myself and many others here, who have un-native ants, have a responsibilty to provide housing for the chosen colony we keep, we do not have the luxury of being able to set free our colonies becuase we cannot house them properly, but you are in a different situation, you rescued a colony and luckily with a queen, and a native species to the UK, at the time "YES"! it was a fantastic thing you did, and again I commend you, but now I think you must realise, to care for them and provide for them is beyond your means, and you must set them free.
Please please please think about it, yes it's great yuor feeding them, but imagine, when a single queen is placed in a test tube and she starts a colony within it, she knows no real differnce, the test tube "IS HER" nest, but to take a queen from an established nest that she built up, with 200+ workers and restrict them to a test tube, is not so good, ( placing the siad queen and her army into an artificail environment, where all there needs are provided for, adequate nest space with heat, food and water etc is ok), she and her workers have lost thier home and become secluded. I hope you can apreciate what I am trying to say.
We all support what yuo did to save them, really we do.
