floral foam formicarium

Beitragvon deadmeat30 » 5. Mai 2007 23:22

hey all, if you've read any of my prevous threads then you'll be aware of the test i was planning with the oasis foam. well i now have that plan in action. ill keep everyone posted on what new in the test formicarium. the amount of moisture that the oasis holds is amazing! ill post some pictures of it all for all to see.

this would be alot cheaper instead of ytong, as thats concreate, and weights a ton to ship. where as floral foam weights next to nothing.

well heres the pictures of my set up. enjouy :)

In deed it looks good. It is not so heavy as Y-tong but in the oasis the ants can dig there one tunnels.
How did you ants respond to it ? (are they in yet ?)

they might be able to dig there own tunnels, but so far seen no sign of this. the ants seems ok in there so far, the queen has moved down into the next, but the workers and the eggs havent. any reason for this?

Hey,

it looks neet. Keep the pictures coming! I'm really courious what will ants do with it. I'm thinking of experimenting with it too. To put it into display farm instead of send/loam.

Great work.

Sand&loam wouldn't probably work, antworks is about 2-3 cm thick so they would probably put the queen in the middle.

the great thing is that the oasis foam comes in about 5 different colours.

green, white, blue, red and pink i beleive! so make it so much easier to use as a display!

Good experiment Alan. I'm not sure why your queen is not with the workers, maybe she needed some time off. ;) As long as the workers still take care of here there is no need to panic.

Looks like it is going to work with the oasis, maybe i try it sometime to. ;)

hey all, i has noticed what look likes it could be mould on the surface, so this would cause a threat to the ants, so ive suspended my experiment. i will keep at this, im going to try dry oasis next time, see how that works. this experiment is far from over!

;) Dry oasis could be the solution for the mould but not every species like dry nests.

yeah i know, im wondering if the old tube to the bottom will do the trick? keep the bottom moist, then top dry, that way they can pick the area best for them!
