no they didn't eat them instead they fortified there new blockgade with it now i dont think even i can break through it
how often does a colony of about 13 ants need to forage so i can adjust roughly to there foraging habits

i was wondering how long does it take for a lasius niger larva to turn into the next phase. as i have some larva which went through the hibernation with my ants but im not sure if there alive they seem to treat them as if they are but im not sure and they have been out of hibernation for at least 3 weeks so when do you think they will they are not very big though but definitely bigger than and egg

Your first question i already answered. ;)

Here you can find my experience with Lasius niger
http://www.antstore.net/viewtopic.php?t=4303
From egg to worker.
But al depends of the weather conditions and the food and the strength of the ants.... so it is not always the same.

Probably ;) if the cotton is turning yellow (are black) i always give them a second one, so they can move if they like.

My Lasius flavus wash in tube from last your April (i think) and the cotton is totally black, i give them a second tube before hibernation, they could move if they like, now they are moving in to the other tube (today ;) )

nope my cotton wool is spotless no blackness or any yellow on it but they must be drinking it because otherwise they would be dead
but im stilling very worried that they dont forage hardly at all is it possible that they forage at night instead to avoid the risk of predators

That could be an option. If the colony is still small they most of the time come out at night to protect them selfs.

yeah thats put my mind at rest because the colony is not much bigger than 13 ants strong and there is no more than 3 workers foraging at one time so i think things should be ok :D
and yesterday for the first time this year i saw two workers feeding off a fly i suppose which will be fed to the larva

In deed, with the first colony i had, i also wash thinking (every minute) are they doing okay, i didn't see them for day, i think they are dead. But you need to be patient with it. It is getting easier with the next colony you are having. ;) Than you know what to expect.
