Your tank ist 15 cm high i think, isnt it? If i'm right, i suggest you to make it higher, because if you fill sand and so on in, there will be just 8 to 10 cm from the bottom until the "roof" (i'm sorry for my bad english^^), so your ants could climb out easly and you have very little space for e.g. PTFE , my tank which Myrmica rubra ist about 20 cm high and until right now, just one came out :)

Yes, i supposed u'll do that, i'm using parafin oil(may be it has another name in english^^), and it works very well too. Within this week i'll get my first Pheidole pallidula colony, for them, i'll use ptfe as well, i hope ist works :)

Just some advice, at the moment, it's not that easy do get insects (except you buy them in a petshop), try catfood :) my M r like catfood with fishtaste very much

Mh .. yes .. they should be in hibernation .. but i just got them 2 Month ago, after putting my former Mr colony into freedom .. and i didnt want to wait 6 month until spring tu watch them :P
as you know, it's better to put them to hibernation, but it's possible to jump over one time, but not to often.

i have heard that it is ok to not hibernate then for one year but it lowers queen life expectancy and egg production next year

Yes, you are right, i don't read something about lower life expectancy, but i agree with you, when you say egg pruduction is lower after the winter, next year they going to get their hibernation.

That is true, it is better for the queen and the colony that they have a hibernation. You can skip it, but it is not a must.

I have to ask, did you catch your colony yourself ? If you buy a colony are get one from a friend who is living more than 10km from you it is better not to let them go. I is not good for nature. (if you now what i mean) Normally it is never a good choice to let them go, better give it to someone else or destroy them (the last option i don't like myself but it is better then to let them in nature)
