hi
Just a few thoughts on types of formicariums.
Im very interested in what people have to say on the subject.
There seems to be some questions when thinking about constructing a formicarium, such as:
*How do I want to view my ants, side on or from above, or both?
*What equipment will I use, what nest material will I use?
And of course more practical issues:
*preventing escape
*keeping the nest moist
*allowing ventilation
*access to the feeding/foraing area
*preventing mould
I have thought about many ideas and still never really felt 100% about any idea. There are so many things you can do, so many ways you can build a formicarium, using glass sheets, picture frames, CD cases, ytong, plaster, plastic bottles or containers, wood, glass tanks, etc etc etc....
So Im asking:
what interesting ideas have you guys come up with?
what types of formicariums have you had the best success with, and what types have you had the most problems with?
One of the main problems for me is that I want to view my ants from side on, in soil, not empty ytong. But I also want them to have a nice area to forage, where I can also access, but not have problems with the ants escaping... etc etc. etc..
I like the design of the "ant apartment" which allows for both side viewing of the nest and a good view of the foraging area.
I have a glass tank so I would rather use that for my next project than to buy off antstore [sorry antstore- but dont worry ill still spend lots of money with you on other things]
Well thanks for reading, I look forward to reading any thoughts people have on this...
