big ants... need new farm... got questions...

Help to the newbie

Beitragvon charles17 » 20. Aug 2005 01:55

imnot sure what kinda ants they are. but they resemble camponoutus herculeanus. the queen is about 2 cm long and . 5 cm wide, about 1 cm wide if you count her legs. the workers are about 1 cm long and .3 cm wide, 1 cm counting their legs... would the ant farm delux be big enough for them? or the highlander?

ok given those dimensions, the ants will fit in the ant display deluxe right?

if so, what else will i need besides the ant farm itself? i want to get a loam/sand mixture
http://www.antstore.net/shop/product_in ... 0&cPath=42
but what else do i need? do i need a humidification source?

and how much will be shipping to the usa?

again, sorry for so many questions... and thanks for answering them!

Yes, the antfarm deluxe and the highlander are big enough for the 8 mm workers + 1.5 mm long queen. if is one year later the formicarium to small, than you can connected with the new one formicarium.
For the ant farm you need 2-3 of the loam/sand mix.

thanks... now that i know what im going to get... (an antfarm deluxe, an ant box, and some sand/loam) do i need to buy the connector tubes? or do they come with the antfarms? and do i need 10 mm or the 20 mm tubes? do the 20 mm tubes fit on the connectors??
and i have a question about moisturization... will a sprayer of water suffice or do i need that moisture tube thing?
sorry for the many questions and again thanks for being patient! im like one step away from ordering the stuff... lol

The standard connectors are for the 8/10 or the 10/14 mm tubes
If you want use the 16/20 mm tubes, you must make self a 20mm hole in the formicarium.
the moisture can you do over the top of the formucarium.

one last thing- i hate to be too scrutinizing, but since i am an ocean away, i thought it'd be prudent to ask about quality first...

does antstore mass-produce their acrylic ant farms or are they made one at a time for every order? is there anyone that's seeing this thread that can vouch for antstore's quality?

i expect everything to be precise and pristine because it's of german construction... but i won't know until ive spent a lot of money for shipping to see it... so i was wondering if i can get some good testimonials on antstore's ant farms.

thanksss

This is mass-produce:
http://www.antstore.net/shop/index.php?cPath=39_41

From this, we make only a smal sortiment in a (I hope) good quality:
http://www.antstore.net/shop/index.php?cPath=39_76

This I think is a high risk to shipping to you:

thanks sebesta for all your help! the ant farm arrived. it's wonderful lol. and the shipping was remarkably fast. lol. thanks.

i didnt order the loam/sand mix because shipping would havebeen like $30... and i'm having trouble coming up with an appropriate substrate now... i have sand, but that crumbles. i've mixed emulsified paper to the sand to make it harder when it dries.

do you know if there are any known problems with mixing paper and sand for the ants' dirt?

THANKS

thanks!
well theyre in their ant display deluxe with their paper/sand soil. lol...
im just worried that the paper will retain too much moisture and rot or something. or the trace amounts of bleach in the white paper will poison the ants...
but i hope it turns out allright. theyre getting settled haha...
again, thanks for all your help!
ooo and thanks for the free antstore totebag
