If you could select one or several of ant species from Africa, which would it be?

Well, I'd choose a Cataglyphis bicolor species and if I had the chance to get some ants which live in the jungle I'd try to get a Pheidologeton or Ponerinae
But why are you asking?

Well lets see, there is quite some ants in Africa that are really amazing but highly rare.
Plectroctena spp. for example look great and are quite huge and there are other interesting ponerinae, too.

A friend said he maybe could get me african ants, so I am asking people what african ants are cool. Can you be more specific about what species of Ponerinae?

What the hell would you do with real army ants?
Ok there are some ants like the Asian Cerapachys and Leptogenys which are called armyants by some people though they don´t belong to the genus of Ection which are the African armyants I belive.
However you can´t really keep any Ection species because the colonies are just gigantic and the ants move quite often.

One of my friends has actually kept army ants, it appears they are a hardy breed. Altought I believe it was Dorylus.

Well, from what I understand they only move when they have exhausted an area of food, if you keep feeding them, they stay put. They do however breed very quickly but that can be regulated through food intake. As long as you do not underfeed them or overfeed them they are fairly similar to "normal" ants I hear.

A friend actually contacted me about my post here and told me that Pheidologeton, Leptogenys and some Leptanillinae also get called armyants some times. It seems to be a pretty unaccurate word.

I can hardly imagine that it is possible for the ants to stay in their "stationary" phase all the time shince they are unable to make real nests. At least talking about Dorylus, however I once heard that they stay a for quite some time in one place.
I wouldn´t want to try to be honest.^^

From what I understand, they move once a month in nature, and they were kept in 3 inter-connected tanks with the living option of many large testubes.

I wouldn´t want to try to be honest.^^
