I caught a few queens yesterday and today I made a ytong (no idea how to spell it sorry) out of a breeze block as ive seen in forums and youtube.
I have carved out the tunnels and have the recessed the whole area to secure the acryic sheet.

Heres my question;

Can I paint the ytong? Or I should I leave it grey? I was thinking of getting non toxic paint from The early Lerning centre (as im in the uk).
I thought this might be a good idea as I assume if its safe for toddlers then it might not have many offensive chemicles in.

P.s. I know I shouldnt keep the queens together in the long term and I will be making a Ytong for each of them (3).

When I paint my blocks I usually use water and a bit of clay. But typically only has natural colors.

I decided on this approach to be absolutely sure it wouldn't harm the ants.

I, too, was concerned about the toxicity of paint. I have been using food coloring as a sort of water color. I have carved my nests to look like red brick walls or rock walls with gray mortar. I am rather new to the building of formicariums, so mine have only been in use by tiny colonies of C. vicinus for about a month.

Note: I went to my local craft store and bought the concentrated, and more expensive, thick food colorings. I use brown most often.
