My little plaster nest

My little plaster nest

Hello everyone,

today i remembered that i read a "HOW TO DO IT YOURSELF" about plaster nests.

So i thought ... hmmmmm .... lets try it out.

I bought a box of "ROCHER" and ate them all ^^

Bild

Also i bought some "PLAY DOUGH" modelling material.

To build a plaster nest with all this stuff u just take the Rocher box and use the play dough
to form the negative form of the chambers and tunnels in the box. To do that you just
attach the Play Dough to the Rocher Box.

When your done with this step you fill the whole box with plaster and wait until its hardend.

Now you get the whole block out of the rocher box and pull out all the Play dough. Now you
should see all the tunnels and chambers that u made.
Just take the block and put it back into the Rocher box and...... zoooooom there you have your plaster nest.

My nest is hardening right now. I will upload pictures when its done. I made a lot of different chambers.

Some are deep, some are small , some are huge.....

Lets see what the little colony of Lasius niger likes the most

I still dont have a camera to take some pictures of the nest but the Lasius niger colony instantly accepted it. They moved into it after one hour.

The nest was still really moist so i have a lot of condensation on the "glass".

Right now i made a new nest still into a rocher box but this time i only used the chamber type that they prefered.

As i thought they prefer a chamber with a big flat bottom. This way they have a bigger surface to lay down their
eggs and larvae.

This time i will take the nest out the box and let it dry out. The last time i only waited until it was stable

Finaly!

I made a HD Video of the plaster nest and the Lasius niger colony wich is living in it.

I caught the queen last year during nuptical flights and pushed here right at the start , with
about 20-30 pupae from a wild colony in my garden.

The colony woke up a week ago because of the rising temperatures under my roof. So i took
them down in my room and made this video
