Now my colony has started, many months has passed away and i am still fascinated from them.
I love to look how long they took to find the food in the area but a question popped up in my mind since the beggining. Ain't found any topic on this forum to solve the mistery.

Why my ants do cover the food everytime?
Let me explain if i give them meat, sugar or jam they eat and after few minures always start to put small piece of soil on it, one by one untile the food it's quite completely covered... how do u explain this behavior?

Ah, i forgot to tell they are Aphaenogaster subterranea

As far as i know its not discovered. There are some theories about this. One of the theories is , that the ants use the soil to absorb the smell ( the scent) of the pray so other predators dont reckognize the pray and could disturb the ants from gathering it.

Cool... so they "spray" the soil to cover the smell for other insects? Have got any links abt this theory?
