MITES!

Beitragvon tomorrownight » 12. Sep 2010 15:29

hey, ive got some issues with mites i think, ive done a bit of research and basically here are my facts:

- I have found a number (growing number) of small mites, the size of a grain of sand crawling around a Messor Ebenius Tank and a Messor Aurenius Ratus ytong nest.

- As i can see neither ants have Mites on them.

Question:

Are these mites capable of infesting Humans and the rest of my household?

Some people have suggested spraying formic acid mist in the nest, others have said Vita Bosa (?), others have said Bee Mite spray. Has anyone had any experience of any of these, what works? (realy dont want to destroy my colony, especiall not Messor A. R, because they are so expensive!)

I will need to move my Messor A. out of their ytong nest which is essentially sealed. If they will not budge, shall i remove them forcefully before the mites get them? any help would be much appreciated, thank you!

i have taken a photo with them, they are small so you can imagine how difficult this was...

Hey, most people advise lemon juice as a 'cure' to your mite problem.

I myself have never had the problem.

As matt-man advised if you put a couple of cotton wool buds with lemon juice in them ants will rub on them to kill of the mites.

Hey, ive started doing some experiments on my Lasius niger QUeens, i have three infected with Mites and so am trying different things.

So far i had an idea of putting a foreign worker in there to see if she would deal with her mite infestation (might work?) anyway the queen went crazy and killed the workr really quickly. I then put a cotton wool in with her soaked inlemon juice but that didnt seem to work. SHe doesnt have any workers to tend her, i wonder if i should try a queen without any workers? anyway, in conclusion, without direct application to mites by workers and simply the vapour alone, the lemon juice does not help.

I shall also try that bacterial yoghurt that people talk about and also bee mite spray. anything else anyone wants me to try? would be really great to get some positive results!!
