Do I have to have a Basin?

This is my first colony and I am going to buy the 3rd largest glass farm. I wanted to know if I HAVE to have a basin. I would rather not... Thanks in advance for the help. Also what kind of soil would you recommend to use for the Lasius niger? I want to be able to see them so I heard the sand/loam would not be the best choice. Any suggestions?

It's very important you have a basin.
Because you can put there food and water, or just see the ants walk in it.
And common, ants need some place to right?
