Hello I am wondering if anyone can advise me as I am obviously doing something wrong. I have a small Colony of Lasius niger in a nest area which is attached to a glass basin, this has a lid with a foam seal an I have also put about 10mm of PTFE around the top edge of the basin, yet I am still coming home at night to find the odd ant sitting on top of the lid seemingly laughing at me

I have watched the ants and they seem to be able to walk straight over the PTFE strip with no problems at all it doesn’t even slow them down, can anyone make a suggestion as to what I have done wrong?

OK just had another look at the forum and came across this:

Now they mention that Lasius Niger can pass through some mesh and I have a mesh section in the middle of the lid so that could explain that, but i still dont understand the PTFE problem.

Hi,
10mm is not enough (i have 3-5cm). I also advise you to remove the site complete where they can pass, a correction makes it only better to go through On top of that Lasius niger is very stubborn.

Sojave, Thank you for your reply. I intend to remove all of the PTFE and reaply it but what is the best way to do this? Is painting it on with a Wide brush and a masked strip ok or should I mask a channel and pure it?

I use the brush, for most ant species it works fine.
