I will not say it's directly cruel, as I agree that they are just, well, insects. But it's surely an experiment doomed to fail, and thus is a waste of effort.
Let this be perfectly clear: Lasius niger and Lasius flavus will not be able to found colonies together or even live in the same area.
They can co-exist in the same formicarium, given it's a dirt-version and L. flavus is allowed to be subterranean, as it would be in nature.
This ensures that the two will not meet, and L. niger will not attack L. flavus.
