Pupa In My AntWorld

Beitragvon alybalyb » 3. Nov 2009 12:24

Hi Guys,

Just over a month ago I purchased an AntWorld, which is a childrens toy.

I received my Lasius niger ants from the company that supplies the AntWorld a few days later.

You only get Worker ants with this setup.

They came in a small round perspex observation tub that has a magnifing glass built into the lid, mixed up with fine soil.

I was observing them last night and to my surprise there is quite a number of pupa in a chamber they have made for themselfs at the bottom of the antworld.

I use a torch and a magnifing glass to observe them.

They gathered up there pupa and moved them to get them out of the light.

Is it possable that along with the ants that were supplied there were also eggs?

Will they hatch out to be more workers?

My AnyWorld is covered up on both sides to keep it dark with card.

How long can you observe your colony without disturbing them too much?

I normaly only observe my colony 30 sec at a time.

I take a small amount of honey that you eat on toast and mix it with boiling water in a tea spoon is that ok to feed them?

I don't have any expierience with these "AntWorlds"

But i think your pupa won't hatch and i am very sure that these eggs came
with your workers. If the other workers take care of them,
feed them, build them a nest chamber , then you might have a chance but
i don't think so.

Its okay to feed them honey mixed with water but you should keep an eye
on the little buggers. They might fall into it, you can put this mixture on
a piece of cotton.

To observe your ants you should buy some red foil. Ants can barely see
red light so it won't disturb them if you watch through the red foil.

And you dont have to cover the whole farm. Just the nest area , the surface
is free to watch :D

To be honest these are a complete waste of time.. and im not gonna bother even going into it. If you really want to observe ants then you need to get yourself a queen and establish and maintain a real ant colony not just a couple of workers that are gonna die off in a couple of weeks as they have no reason to live....

I couldn't agree more Steve but at the time I was ignorant and I didn't know about Antstore and you guys.

I'm going to get myself a proper Ant Farm setup once Iv done some reaserch and when the hibernation period is over and when i eventually decide on which spieces to keep.

Thats the right decision ;)

You just have to ask the right questions ... then you will know wich ants are the right one for you.

I decided to keep Camponotus ligniperda because I wanted big ants wich doesn't expand to fast and are agressive
