I have a new and small (15 ants + Queen) colony and yesterday I fed them some fish flakes (I'd read in these forums that some people did that). Anyway, I was watching an ant chomping away on one of the fish flakes and today its lying dead next to the fish flake. Any ideas why? Has anybody else had problems with fish flakes - has it eaten itself to death?
I've used them before, but the ants have to be very hungry, also if they aren't eaten within an hour or so they tend to go soft and stick to whatever surface you placed them on. Not a great food but a cheap, easy alternative. I don't know of any reason why it would kill your ants
I tried feeding fish flakes to my [Ligneperda] Camponotus ligniperda colony, they didn't seem that impressed. However they do seem to enjoy freeze dried bloodworms, you can buy them from most pet shops.
