You could choose polyrhachis illaudata. Its not compareable to polyrhachis dives. Bigger, slower reproduction... you can keep them in a ytong nest. But id advise you to buy as big a colony as possible because small conlonies are really inactive.

Been a while but its finished
i added desert sand to the basin so the ants are not able to choose where they make a nest, its very fine and perfect for stopping nest building,

it also looks kinda cool as well as being easy to clean, not going to bee much mould in there,

the ants i choose were formica fusca, and they are already running around exlopring, i choose them because they have several queens and make large colonies, perfect for this large basin

what do you all think ?
Any tips for someone who has never had formica fusca before ?

Very nice setup, how do you make sure they ants stay in ? Only with a lid ? If you use only a lid and you are feed your ants they will escape (when the colony is bigger). Make sure you also use a glide material.

yeah i noticed that already, kind a have to flick them all back in before they all rush out lol, they are very speedy ants and can climb upside down on glass with zero effort, i was planning to connect a small arena to the basin and put food in there, at the moment its not too bad.

I was very interested in getting all my equipment from antstore however I looked at how much the ordering was and it turns out it's around £15 per kg and since im getting several kgs it way to expensive. I looked in my local pet shop for glass basin but they do not have drillings in I was wondering if anyone had any advice on where i should get a basin from.

You can use a plastic basin. (like they use for fish) Its easy to drill holes in it yourselfs.
