My small scary spider

Beitragvon highered » 23. Jun 2009 16:41

My pet spider which was nesting under my window. I introduced another one of the same species but bigger and unfortunately it ate the smaller one then sulked for about 1-2 weeks then died. Never mind it was nice having a pet spider for a while.

This is a picture of the common spider that I allow to live in my flat so I can feed them to my ants:

Yes, I enjoy letting them live in my flat for free, but then feed them reguarly to my ants. I never find all of them so there are always some that escape and have baby spiders. Even in the cold months there is always the odd one around so when it comes to the warm months and there is more food there are alot more of them. Easily one big one per week for my ants. Also I have alot of small moths for reason and these normally end up as spider food.

My flat was infested with clothes moths when I bought it; they would probably have been good ant food. A few are left, but I don't catch them often anymore. I used to have very fat spiders living in the window frames, but I replaced those so the spiders are gone too. If only I'd had more foresight!

At present, I feed any moth larvae I find to a big spider that's living in my bathroom, but I don't think I could bring myself to feed her to ants now that we're friends. I suppose I'll be able to find plenty of those spindly leggy spiders around the place. Are they really good nutrition though? Their bodies are tiny!

highered, look up Tineidae on wikipedia - if your moths look anything like that (about 1cm long), be careful with your clothes!

Thanks, will do, all spiders have much more protein then an equivalent sized or even bigger sized fly, this is because they only eat protein (insects) so are full of protein, not like a nectar eating fly for example.

Yes I think those are the moths in my flat, they probably are eating my clothes, but not significantly as there are no holes in my clothes anywhere.

Mine seem to focus on the wool carpet and turn their noses up at my clothes, but all the same, probably best to be careful. Do you know whether you have the casemaking sort or the webbing sort? I've got the former; the larvae are actually quite cute when they're shuffling along with their little wool cases. The adult moths are annoying little gits though, and sometimes really hard to catch.
