wooooooooo i have now got 26 workers and 10 soldiers and she must have about 40 eggs 20 larve and 7 brood i have move them in to a bigger tube ty ant store for these cool ants

I have a question. New to ant keeping. What medium should I use. I live in Alaska so buying supplies from antstore.net is not the best option. I can buy the Excavator loam substrate at a local pet store. Should I mix this with sand? If so what ratio? 3 parts loam substrate to 1 part sand?

The prepackaged mediums say 3 parts sand to 1 part loam, loam just being a loamy soil? So would another option be to mix sand 3:1 with a good soil?

Hello mathewdolan and welcome.

Yes you can mix loam with sand. It would be nice if the sand does not have any bacteria or fungus. Some people cook the sand first before they use it. (steam it) If you mix it 3:1 it should work out just fine.

help help i bought anothere Pheidole pallidula colony came with only 8 eggs and one queen ive had her for like 17 days now but eggs have not changed a bit ive tried cricket and meal worm and honey water and now currantly trying insect protein jelly she will not move of the cotton plz help

Queens don't need to feed before they have their first workers. As far as the eggs not changing, I don't know the incubation time for Pheidole pallidula eggs, but for many ants it takes longer than 17 days to go from egg-larvae.

Just leave her be and stop fussing over her and im sure things will start moving along.. and it does take a lot longer for them to change.. so be Patient.. and leave her be.. dark and warm...

Hm, not sure about Pheidole pallidula, but I have seen Pheidolegeton taking seeds.

Alot of various ants take seeds selectively, I've even seen Formic fusca doing this. And I've also read about ants that take seeds of which shell the larvae use to make cocoons.

Wish I remember source for the later claim, will update if I find it.

on my first pheidole colany ive now got anout 80 or 90 ants now about 60 workers about 20 soljers
i am ordering some myrmica rubra 51 to 100 of them so i will no this will be a sucsessfull colany so they will hopefully come friday or sataday or maybe thursday if i am luky
