Hello all...

Are you using a test tube only with water then cotton ball?

Is the other end of the test tube open or closed?

thnx

It is a test tube with water and cotton ball and then comes the ants. I placed it in an arena and removed the cotton ball from the end. And I put some very loose cotton pile in the arena. One of them was dragged in after a week. So it is not so open, but the ants can walk in and out as they like.

Gotcha,

I'll adopt the same.

I have had mine closed with another cotton ball at the end but this may stress them a bit I would imagine.

Queen alone and small colony is better in a closed test tube. They did not like to be open at all. If you have more ants then you can open the test tube in an arena. But it is a good idea to put something in that they could barricade themshelf with. Most of the time it is sand.
My colony is almost 1 year old, that's why I opened them up.

I too open it like these guys ,when is there 2-5 workers ,but you must to barricade the door to tube - cover it with small stone or get on it leaf.

My Messor structor queen had workers in the last year but all died because of dryness. I added some Tetramorium caespitum larva to boost the queen as I mentioned before in this topic. She eated all the big queen larvas and only left a worker larva. Now she has the worker from this other species for help. And there are some quite big larva of her own. So she progress well again.
