I keep the colony in a tank of 22x45 cm, the soil is around (there are some slopes) 15cm deep.
The soil I used I got it from a forest and I used no sand
After 24 hours they extended the initial tunnel I dug for them (about 2cm in diameter). Some hours later the ants dug another hole bigger than the one I dug myself and eventually blocked the initial one with the earth they extracted.
I don't like the idea of keeping then inside the probe tube dug undergroud like some have recommended, but I keep it there for their supply of water. However I use a spray to simulate dew and rain (to a certain extent
).
Now here comes the interesting part:
I found funny about their attacts that while some group of workers concentrate right on their prey (flies in most cases), another tries to bury it alive, this is no joke. The seem to lose interest in their buried meat afterwards. Never seen this in my previous colonies.
I'd appreciate it if anyone could give me more information about these species hunting tactics.
This was not the case for bigger preys, such as locust which was about 6cm long (I cut its wings so it was easier for them to kill). This was the first time I saw the soldiers in action. The soldiers were the only ones capable of biting through its skin.
Awesome ants altogether.
I'll post some photos later on.
PS: I was wondering if any of you knew what sort of grains they would eat, and if you knew if I'm doing something wrong.
