why are Pheidole pallidula a risk class 3, are they hard to keep? if so what are the problems of having them?

Hi Joshposh,
The reason why there risk class 3 is probably because there masters at escaping so be sure that your formicarium is escape-proof!

p.pallidula are TINY, and i mean TINY! they will escape, no matter how good you are at securing your nest, they will chew thru virtually anything, including the silicon that holds your nest together if they get a chance

definitly not a beginers ants, run a search for the name on this forum and you will find lots of info and experience reports on them


the Risk class refers to the possibility of them being able to setup a colony in the UK or other country that ant-store sells ants to, this would be a very bad situation for local speices, as they can introduce new diseases that our speices are not immune to, parasites and other nasty things, also our local eco-system has been balanced over thousands of years, and a new species may decimate local populations of other animals

they are very nice ants. But like said, masters in escape. I keep them myself for about 2 years now. They grow very fast. Tiny workers and a little bigger majors with strong jaws. I have a diary for these ants here at the forum (need to update that )
