New order, Camponotus ligniperda

New order, Camponotus ligniperda

Beitragvon M3TzR » 16. Jun 2009 13:09

Hey guys,

Been reading the forum for a couple of weeks now,

I currently have some Lasius niger which are going great,

On Sunday night I ordered the following,

1 x ANTSTORE Starter Set - basin vision - 30x20 44,90 €
- shipping: package additional
1 x Camponotus ligniperda 11,90 €
- Size: Queen + 0 worker
1 x acryl glass XT pipe - 10/08mm - 1m 2,16 €
- extra1: to halve is possible
2 x Test-glass-tube 100x12 mm / 10 pcs. 2,00 €
1 x Lasius niger (Black Garden Ant) 6,80 €
- Size: queen + 11-25 worker

I have a Ytong, well I'm about to make one out of thermalite block, I seem to find mixed opinions with regards to Camponotus ligniperda and keeping the thermalite dry/damp.

also I have one more issue... I live in a flat.. 3rd floor, I cannot take the farm outside for them to hibernate, but I was thinking I could put them on a window shelf? would the draft/cold from the window bring the temp down enough?

Just waiting now... my order is still on pending :( hope they get to me this week......

Take care guys..

Thanks

Hiya bud and :sign_welcome: to the forum...

I dont think putting your ants on a window ledge is gonna be a great idea.. i think ur gonna need a room to be kept unheated... Or get yaself a second hand fridge and put them in there, as long as you put the fridge on its highest tempt they will be fine :D

The best option is to grab yourself a mini-fridge! They are great for keeping them in over winter, and most sit pretty at around 10-15 degrees!

And if you have some space, it keeps your beer cool too!

Hey,
I would like to know what accersories i would need to get for a Camptonus lingedea colony. I want my ants to dig there own underground nest and would not want a Y-TONG nest. Also can this colony be fed live insects.

BROOKSY77- i dont have personal experience but my brother keeps this species and feeds them the normal sugar water and fresh water and two live spiders every two days and also he gives meal worms once a fort-night.

He keeps in sand/loam mixture with a dead wood pile in the corner of the basin, he doesent like y-tongs so he always does soil/loam based nests and his are thriving. to give you an idea he started with a single queen last summer and now has a healthy large colony for their age.

Yes my brother uses mini fridges for hibernation, they work great and they are cheap from ebay or argos.

can i just ask but does anyone feed their Camponotus L. seeds as my bro did a expirement and they took them all.

matt :)

Any ant species are cool, :)

some people other species than others just because they are a certain personallity :) expirement with different ants but always remember for beginers some kind of Lasius specie would be better.

As for buying things, the usual food stocks are a good place to start but you don't need these until your colony is reading to move out of the tube :)

i'v just got myself Camponotus ligniperda and this starter set: ANTSTORE Profi Set - XL glassfarm/arena - 30x20. but you dont need one as big as this at the begining. about them digging there own underground nest im not to sure on that because i have just a queen and a few cocoons and shes not gonna be moving for a long time. but iv heard they are not very keen to dig there own nest but im gonna make a few holes in the glassfarm with a pencil to start them off and if it comes to it degrade there nest there living in for example making the nest very bright and the glassfarm dark.

Maybe someone who has more experienced with these ants can tell us if its possible to make them dig there own underground nest.

thnx

Hello Martyn, Camponotus ligniperda are dam slow to grow so if you put them into a setup now chance are your not gonna see any ants for the next year... or more.. I have a colony with around 20 workers.. and i never see them out getting food or honey.. But im sure they will dig a nest if they have too.. they prefer dead wood.. and hollow things.. If i was you tho i really would wait a good year perhaps before moving them into your glassfarm.

Best of luck with them.... :)

Hello again steve, iv already moved her into the feeding area so i can keep a good eye on her. im just wondering what i should do after the hibernation, if i am wanting them to dig in the glassfarm should i move her into the glassfarm from the feeding area ? My mane worry is that they will not bother to dig at all and just move into the hose that connects the glassfarm to the feeding area :(

Dont worry steve im sure ill think of some more questions for you to answer lol :P
