Need help with my ants, please

Beitragvon Kaja » 15. Aug 2013 19:44

Hi

I bought Lasius niger 1 queen an there were about 15 workers.
Now all the workers are dead :-(
I need to make the queen start laying eggs again.
I offered her some orange and some peach fruit. I have no idea if she eat any of it.
Maybe i should offer her sugar water or even honey mixed in water.
But i dont like that idea both are sticky and she can get stuck and the honey expand in moist weather.

Can someone tell me what i should do so i can get more workers?

Same shipment i also bought Lasius (Cautolasius) flavus 1 queen and only 2 workers.
I still keep them in the tube they came in.
1 worker is dead so now the queen only have 1 worker.
I offered them some orange and peach fruit. I have no idea if they are eating it.
The queen started laying eggs right away.

What food should i give my ants?

I hope some will help me because i have no idea what to do.

Hi

Forgot to ask about protine.
I know the larvas need protine.
I live in a city where i cant find bugs or flies.

What kind of protine should i use?

Just to your last question in my bad english:
Proteins for ants could be insects you can buy in an animal shop,
but small colonies could use small doses, so you could give them flies or mosquitos f.e..

Cooked plain chicken, my Lasius niger love chicken breast..perfect for a protein boost to develop larve. Easy to get hold of and not as tricky as bugs.

Another thing you can do is go to a fish bait shop and get some mealworms in a tub.
Even if the mealworms turn to beetles they love them, just remember to cut he mealworms and the beetles in half as they cannot cut through the tough outer layers.

I think the first thing you should do is try to find out why all the workers died.
It is normal that 1-2 die of the original workers due to age, stress or travel. But all of them is not normal.
In what amount of time did they died?

Thereby I advise you to read in to the Lasius niger and Lasius flavus via this forum so you know what they need.
It would have been best t do so before ordering I suppose.
What is the temprature they are currently in?

Here are some tips:
1. They need protein via other insects like crickets, flies, etc.
2. Mix sugar and or honey with water and provide it to them in a pill strip or peace of alu foil.(Just a drop or 2)
3. Keep them at room temperature for now
4. Cover the tubes so they are in the dark and get the rest to restart laying eggs
5. Keep in mind that a queen by itself might not feed withought any workers. In nature they can live 6 months to a year without food in the founding stage. When the first workers emerge they will start to find food and feed their queen.
6. if you feed them do not put the food directly in to the tube they are in. This will often stick to the inside of the tube wich in most occasions will cause fungus to grow inside the tube wich can be harmfull for the queen.
So put them in a plastic container and put he food right outside the tube.
