My Pheidole pallidula Colony

Cataglyphis bicolor

These are a bit hard to keep don't you think. They are dessert ants (like you said yourself) ;) So they need much heating.

Hope you have more luck with this one.

yeah, i wont get bicolor just yet, although i really love them! they wuld need a very large tank, heat isnt so much of an issue, i've kept reptiles for years, and the tempreture controls are pretty simple to set up and control

gonna get Velox anyways at the moment, maybe when i move home and get a big tank i'll get bicolor :D

Sure depends on the set up....but when the base is a small basin you could not "enlarge" it :)
A 30x20 basin stay a 30x20 basin..... ^^

easy enough, just put it in a big tank :) but the Velox ants are not particuly big, and the 30x20 will house them long enough for me to stablise a big setup for them

I only want to say it by the way :) Dont knwo the size of Velox but i think you think about how to keep them and so i believe you that the basin isnt too small ;)
Have good luck with your new ones. Tell us when you order them/when you get them!

Food that pheidole pellidula eats

Beitragvon methuselah » 13. Dez 2007 15:31

I used to think ants generally eat anything human consume. But it seems that different ant species prefer different type of food.

I remember when I first introduced a new batch of pheidole pellidula into formicarium, they carried oat flakes to the tube. Since then they never touch it. Neither do they seem to like seeds either. They never even touch honey! I know insects like spiders seem to be their favorite food but they never like the dead dried flies, nor the bloom polls from the antstore.

Furthermore, is difficult to find insects during winter.

I wonder if anyone can provide me a list of food that can be given to pheidole pellidula? Is their preference dependent on the colony size and seasons? I am also wondering ants of the same species keep by different people will have different preferences as well.

I am actually directing this questions to people who actually keep this particular species and their ants actually like the type of food they gave. Appreciate if you could response to this post positively as I am sure this will be much help to those who wants to keep this type of species.

Mine like:

Out of hibernation (March till end of November);
Red runners, dubia's, grasshoppers, spiders, mosquitos, flour maggots and lot of other insects ;)
Some honey (not all types)
No seeds

In hibernation;
Almost nothing, i give them insects once a week and the eat from it but not much.
Honey they eat but also not to much.

Red runners and dubia's are cockroaches. They are very good for your ants (i feed them to all of my colonies), i buy them in a local pet shop.
Flour maggots are a kind of worms that turn into beetles. They like them very much to, here you can buy them in a fishing store.
