depends, you should feed them every 1-2 days with insects and honey water, even that is less than they would get in the wild.

Theres no reason why you cant feed them that frequently, go into your garden and collect lots of insects, then freeze them, and feed your ants every couple of days, honey is very cheap a big pot will last a year if it is stored correctly

Water is the thing that will kill your ants the fastest, 24 hours on a hot day with no water can easily wipe a colony out

If you are thinking about holidays, well, u must find someone to make sure they have a good water supply, at a push they will be ok for a week without any sugar, if it is a small colony, but absolutly not longer than that

I've heard of people leaving colonies for several months with no food, but they probably found something in their habitat they could eat, i doubt they actually ate nothing at all for months. Either way it's not recommended.

If they are bloated and have a lot of food in their abdomens, their can surely live a few months without feeding. So it's not necessary to feed them regularly, as all ants are able to store food.

That is true but if you like your colony to grow you need to feed them and take care off them. Why would you not feed them... ?
