I used to think that Massachusetts didn't have many really cool kinds of ants in it, but after doing some research, I'm finding that there are more cool ants here than I thought. So I've made a list of all the really cool species that live here that I've found out about so far. I will put an interesting bit of information about each species next to there name. I hope that a few people here live in MA. I will update it when I find other interesting species. ( I know that one does...
) Enjoy!Solenopsis molesta- This species will sometimes rob the brood from other colonies of ants. Also, the queen can lay up to about 330 eggs a day!
Pheidole pilifera- Like all Pheidole species, these ants are dimorphic and have soldiers. They also harvest seeds for food.
Amblyopone pallipes- These ants are very primitive, and are sometimes known as Dracula ants because they feed off of the lymph of their own larvae.
Solenopsis carolinesis- I can't find much info on this species, but Solenopsis ants are usually pretty interesting.
Prenelepis imparis- sometimes known as False Honey Ants, these ants have workers that store food to feed the larvae.
