LASIUS NIGER JOURNAL
I received this colony from Ant store on 8th February, 2006. It arrived with 1 healthy queen, around 6 larvae, some eggs and about 9 workers.
8th February, 2006
I tapped the small colony in the 20 wide, 40 long and 20 high tank (in cm). They started eating a blob of honey I put in the nest and a dead spider which they haven’t taken the slightest interest in. When they finished they grabbed all the brood and nested by a stone, in which after about an hour moved, and went in a small hole next to the glass in which they haven’t started building.
9th February, 2006
There’s has been nest building today, as they have developed a tiny mound around the hole where they have nested. There wasn’t much foraging activity though this morning, but around 3.00pm they started foraging with a maximum of four workers out of the nest at the same time. Also I can see part of the queen and some larvae and eggs next to the glass.
1st March, 2006
There’s been lots of nest activity since the last 3-4 weeks. They’ve been building and now I can see the queen! If I lift the tank up a bit there is the queen’s chamber. Inside there’s the queen, 7 larvae, 1 larvae pupating and some workers in there. There has been inside activity but hardly any outside.
