Lasius niger question. (Digging)

Beitragvon jbc » 27. Mär 2011 10:47

Hi, I bought my Lasius niger colony in September 2009 the first year I didn't hibernate them, then in 2010 October to 2011 March I hibernated them, but they haven't dug themselves in the sand, they live above the ground in a corner and have built a big wall against the drainage tube, all these year's.

1. question- Does the drainage tube blocks the way for the queen to move?

2. Do I have to remove the drainage tube?

3. Will they even dig in?

I dont have any experience myself with using this type of setup as I always use a Ytong. But if the sandloam is damp enough for them they yes i would think they should dig... do you cover the nest at all or is it light all the time.. if it is that may be a factor in why they do no dig.

The tube i think should have been right close to one side.. Maybe move that too?? I myself would try everything.. move tube to the other end.. and cover the nest with red tape.

I dont have red tape. Does completely black works when i cover it completely?

Maybe I should remove the tube from the nest?

post from 12:33

No questions anymore I removed the tube and they immediately went in a hole that I made earlier. :D

I covered the back with some cardboard and I hope that they will stay there.
