keeping ants

Beitragvon adam james » 9. Feb 2006 22:10

Im not very fond of the ant farms with thin sheets of glass with soil held between because even in these the ants can hide its the same with tanks filled with soil. I have came up with a good ant farm witch i have had great succes with lasius niger and mymica rubra.I use ferera rosha boxes linked together with short lenthes of transparent tubeing. In these i put a thin layer of sand witch is kepted moist with a pipet witch goes thro a tiny hole in the lide whitch is covered after use with a bit of bluetack. The ants dont mind the thin sand and the queens lay and the workers care for the larva and pupa. the boxes are clear and have excellent visabillity and this layout simulates massive chambers with interlocking galleries i rest all this on a table with a black towl draped over to darkenit all.I only view it by darkening the room and usesing one of those mini mag lights the ants dont seem to mind this and carry on there buisnes. For forraging a tube comes from the boxes and in to a large tank which has been planted up.It has a tight fitting mesh lid and floresent lights.Even though theres an abundence of soil the colonys dont move.I hope youve enjoyed reading and get some ideas.Happy Ant Keeping. ADAM
