Personaly id activley recomend the basin style of farm. The starter set is great. I bought more sand and also used soil. But in hindsight the amount of sand provided in the starter set was probably about right. As iv "lost" my ants in the extra volume of ground. The starter set is great (i think) and provides everything I needed other than dead insects to feed them but you should be able to find somthing to squish in the garden!

The honey water mix and the barrier are very good. Dont forget to use the barrier stuff its the bottle with the little brush in it. Once dry ants cant cross it so they wont escape.

I would recommend covering the sides of the basin with black card or bin bag liner up to the level of the sand (it just provides a more natural enviroment)

L.niger should be fine with one basin to begin with and the queen and ten or so workers you recive will have plenty of space to expand the nest. Id place some stones and perhaps a stick or two in to give them somthing to explore. Use your imagination though!

I tipped my ants out of the test tube when i got them! DONT DO IT! just place it in the basin and be patient! The main advice id give is be patient all the misstakes iv made have been due to impatience.

Keep in touch as iv just started and feel iv made loads of misstakes so far so you might be able to help me! especialy seens as your considering the same farm as iv got.

indeed, you have to be patient. ;)

30*20*20 basin is good to start with (a starters set also) you can couche, you have to now how you going to install your ant farm.

I always say, look around at the gallery of this site for ideas for your ant farm.

If you have questions feel free to ask ;)
