Huge ant colony

Beitragvon 4mykids » 3. Okt 2007 15:59

Ok, this colony has a tons of soldiers and about 14 Queens all with wings.
If you look close, you will see the huge Queens with wings. I have them housed in a 10 gallon plastic fish tank I filled with 40% plaster, 20% perlite 20% sand and 20% real fine wood sheddings. I filled the tank up with this combination added water, mixed it up & waited for it to dry. I then turned the tank over, took the block out and carved all of the tunnels and cavities myself. I then just put the block back in the container. The tunnels and cavites go all the way around each side and are connected -

This colony is pretty argressive. This is not all of the ants - I have another tupperware container filled with more along with about 6 or 7 winged queens as well.

This is one of those gel farms which of course I removed the gel from -

This is the formicarium from a distance - I carved one huge cavity in the fron and all of the smaller ones on the sides and in the back.

This is a pretty good shot of a few winged Queens - they have a nasty bite!

This is dinner time - this spider is about 3 inches long.

They enjoyed this much - they took the legs off first and then didn't touvh it until that night - it was pretty bad when I took it out the next day.

You can see a few of my formicariums - all done pretty much the same way - They are under a 400 Watt medal Halide. They love it..... They still produce eggs from this light.

Give me a few minutes - I will send you my brand new one I am MOST proud of - only one Queen, no wings but they have dozens of white eggs and dozens of light brown shelled eggs.

Hehe ,it looks like you have new big colony of Camponotus ants ;) :)

,I also had one ,2 years ago , it was big colony (1000-1200) of Camponotus vagus ,something like that ;) ... they remade my formicarium by their ideas and made some new enters/exits from my plaster nest  ... not only one times ,I remember ,circa 5-6 times in 2 weeks :( ... my mother wasnt happy ,when ants were everywhere at every second morning  ... then I put them (after 2 months) into my garden.
Colony is still alive now ...

So ... be careful with this colony ,but your nests looks good in look and also in security ... so no problems ;)

Thanks Skippy,

I'm sure they will make their own cavities :)

I just wanted to give them a start and be able to peek in when I want :)
