I noticed some big ants wandering around outside so I looked online and discovered they were fertilised wingless QUEENS! So I caught one in a matchbox and looked for some things to make a formicary. I have made a simple formicary from a big glass jar filled with soil and some rocks, and I've made a moat. I put the queen in hoping she will start a nest.
Is this ok? Is there anything special I need to do?
This is fine to start off with. But read around this forum a bit and you will find how to make a nice farm and how to take care of your ants. Check out the Care sheet.
Ok thanks, I'll read around the forum more. I have looked at the care sheet but I don't have glass / pipes etc so I probably won't be able to make something really good.
I have the lid to the jar, but won't they suffocate if I put it back on?
get the lid and i thin piece of cloth like a hanky or something similar that lets air through then cut a hole in the lid put the cloth on the top of the jar then screw the lid over it
Is that soil moist? If it drys out the queens will die. Also, that moat will simply kill the queens if they try to leave. They will get to the top of the jar and fall into the water. You are better off with a lid with small holes in it.
