You have to keep the whole sand damp. Because when its getting dry the sand get very hard and the ants could not ditch.

I'm not sure if I understand this question. Cracks are the consequence of placing cotton wool next to the sand( cracks won't tell you how much water should be added…). Add 20 ml and wait. Water will spread. Add another portion.
Try to achieve areas of different humidity(like in my first picture).
Ants are smart, just watch them.

ok thanks.now im giving them 1 or 2 insects a day and the all are eated.and maybe i need to take out the cotton wool out and insert a tube?
