Help to the newbie

Dead ant

Beitragvon ford-ute » 10. Mär 2008 07:05

just curious (just think way ahead of my self) since i have quite wide and farm 4cm my queen has dug in and i can no longer see her but if later she has workers and some of them die or the queen herselfs would the works haul her or them out and put them on the trash or will they be left in the nest

just so i can tell when ants die in my farm

Yes, most likely they will bring all the dead ants up. At least all of my ants remove dead ones from the nest.

And thank you for writing in proper english and using punctuation.

I don't know if different species deal with their dead differently, but most ants are fastidious and will move their dead sisters out of the nest; you may well find a funeral pile in months to come.

In my Lasius niger colony dead workers are recycled quickly and eaten by larvae, so only small pieces of chitin are thrown out of the nest ;)

Most species drop there dead 'sisters' with the trash. But there are species who eat them. So it is hard to say if the species you have will bring the queen above ground. If your colony is bigger and they bring the dead workers above ground they are going to do the same with the queen if she would die.

Try to remove dead workers once in a while.

It's not that it is bad to put her (on there self) in the farm but than you could have small problems like this one. ;)

i know its not bad but like you said I could be watering and feeding a piece of soil for 6 or 12 mounths before i relise that my queen is dead

but these are the risks you take with this hobby i suppose
