Caterpillars as food

Beitragvon badman » 2. Jul 2008 16:20

Has anyone offered ants a caterpillar before? I got some that are sold as reptile food, inside it was like a weird purple/grey cream which seemed quite fatty.

I offered it to some Camponotus herculaneus and Camponotus ligniperda but they showed no interest at all. Quite disappointing, I thought a big fat caterpillar would have plenty of good stuff in it, all the nutrients/protein requried to metamorphosise into a moth etc.

Catapillars are quite fatty, i'd recomend letting them turn into pupa first, then break that open and feed it instead, or wait for them to turn into butterflys n feed them

My Pacyhcondyla love chasing moths about :D its great watching them leap off things to grab them mid flight! most of the time they miss, but eventually they catch them
